Technically, this belongs to the Digital Art, Fractal Art category. But what prevails for me here is not the technique but my intention. This is a conceptual piece and it is important to me that it is seen this way. Unfortunately, there are no sub-categories in the Fractal Gallery so I decided to post it where the meaning (not the tool) belong. I have a love-hate relationship with squares. I admire their symmetry and calm self-confidence but, at the same time, the rigidity of their form makes me feel very uncomfortable. I want to squirm out of them and feel free to be an unpredictable, changing shape.
So these squares that break through their own limits and melt into each other are a form of transgression that provides relief and rebellious satisfaction.
I really love the composition of this one. The "vertical offset" effect is something I have experimented with myself, and in the context of this piece, it seems to communicate floating away from the two-dimensional canvas, which to me is as much of a breakout and transgression as the distortion of the squares. You are not just moving across the field of view, but off of it. The contrast of sky-colors and earth-colors reinforces this upward tendency, I think.
I also like the grain in this one. Don't know if it was made in UF or added after, but it doesn't really matter. The texture kind of gives the eye something to grab on to, and it is nice.
I rarely enjoy reading comments that much, thank you!
I particularly appreciate the "breakout" and "transgression" interpretation, because this is exactly what this simple series of Quadrillés means to be. This is my favourite style of fractals, pointing towards abstract and conceptual art rather than the decorative. My watchers rarely like them.
